On January 31, the United Kingdom began "Brexit," becoming the first member to end its membership in the 28-nation European Union.  The British exit had generated huge political controversy since Britain's June 2016 referendum, which the "Leave" vote won 52-48%. The controversy is not yet over: Britain had been part of the EU since 1973, and months of negotiations will follow over its future relationship with the remaining EU countries.
