This Policy Briefing event, which had been scheduled as a March 18 luncheon at the Georgian Club, was postponed as a result of the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. Unfortunately, the Georgian Club has also become a coronavirus casualty and has since shut down. Given the ongoing uncertainty over when large gatherings can resume safely, this event has been rescheduled for May 19 as a Zoom online event and will be streamed live. There is no charge, but you must register to attend.

On January 31, the United Kingdom began “Brexit,” becoming the first member to end its membership in the 28-nation European Union. The British exit had generated huge political controversy since Britain’s June 2016 referendum, which the “Leave” vote won 52-48%.
It’s not yet over: Britain had been part of the EU since 1973, and months of negotiations will follow over its future relationship with the remaining EU countries. The transition period ends December 31.

Join Andrew Staunton, British Consul General in Atlanta, and Zilvinas Silenas, President of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) and former President of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute, for a discussion moderated by Georgia Public Policy Foundation President Kyle Wingfield. (Wingfield was a Brussels-based correspondent for The Wall Street Journal before moving to Atlanta.)
This event is open to the public. There is no charge to attend but registration is required. Attendance is limited to the first 100 registrants.
About the speakers:
Andrew Staunton, who took up his appointment in Atlanta as Her Majesty’s Consul General in June 2018, is the senior U.K. government representative in the Southeast, responsible for relations with Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi and Alabama. He leads a team that works to promote British trade and investment in the United States, support British nationals, conduct public diplomacy on key issues, and build scientific and research co-operation. He also sits on the Marshall Scholarship selection committee.
Before taking up his posting in Atlanta, Staunton was Deputy Head of Mission and Economic Counselor at the British Embassy in Athens and Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Dublin (2009 to 2013). Since joining the U.K. diplomatic service in 1987 he has also served in China, France, Romania and Canada. The native of Glasgow, Scotland, lives in Atlanta with his wife, Rebecca; they have two adult children, both living in Britain.
Zilvinas Silenas became President of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) in May 2019. From 2011-2019 he was President of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute (LFMI), bringing the organization and its free-market policy reform message to the forefront of Lithuanian public discourse. In that role, he and the LFMI won two prestigious Templeton Freedom Awards (2014 and 2016) for Municipality Performance Index and the Economics in 31 Hours textbook, now used by 80% of Lithuanian high school students. Silenas holds degrees in economics from Wesleyan University and the ISM University of Management and Economics, and has served in numerous teaching and advisory roles. He and his wife, Rosita, live in Atlanta.
Kyle Wingfield, President and CEO of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation, is a native of Dalton and graduate of the University of Georgia. He joined the Foundation as president and CEO in April 2018 after spending nine years as an opinion columnist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has also worked for the Wall Street Journal, based in Brussels, Belgium, from 2004 to 2009, and for the Associated Press, based in Atlanta and Montgomery, Ala., from 2001 to 2004.
