Supreme Court Ruling on ObamaCare: ‘Deeply Disappointing’
Atlanta — Kelly McCutchen, President and CEO of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation, responded today to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in King v. Burwell, which challenged the legality of tax subsidies given to individuals in federally operated exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act:
“It is deeply disappointing to hear of the Supreme Court’s decision in King v. Burwell, and more importantly, to know the enormous threat it poses to our cherished principles of separation of powers and the rule of law,” McCutchen said.
“Ironically, this week marked the 10th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling against Suzette Kelo and for the city of New London, Conn., which wanted her property for private development. That ruling inspired the states to work toward more protections against abuse of eminent domain. Today, Georgia has one of the toughest eminent domain laws in the nation, while the lot on which Kelo’s home once stood on remains empty and undeveloped.
“Now Georgia must work toward better health care options in the state – options that don’t include expanding the federal role and eliminate federal coercion.
“This ruling should not deter Congress and the President from working together to address clear shortcomings in the Affordable Care Act. Maintaining the status quo doesn’t help families facing skyrocketing premiums, huge deductibles and fewer choices of providers. A bipartisan solution could address the common goals of improving cost, access and quality and help the many Georgians who have been harmed by this law.
“And just as we did with Kelo, the Foundation will continue to work toward better options for Georgians, this time in health care.”
