Atlanta – On Thursday, March 22, just days before the U.S. Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of the 2010 federal health care law and Georgia anticipates the aftermath, Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens and health care expert Ronald E. Bachman will provide an important “Georgia Health Care Update” at an 8 a.m. Leadership Breakfast hosted by the Georgia Public Policy Foundation at Cobb County’s Georgian Club.

Sam Olens was sworn in as Georgia’s Attorney General on January 10, 2011, after which Georgia’s Office of the Attorney General became part of a 26-state coalition and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) challenging the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.  The U.S. Supreme Court will consider arguments in the case beginning March 26.

 

Olens was Chairman of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners from 2002 through 2010 and chairman of the Atlanta Regional Commission from 2004 through 2009.  He was also Vice-Chair of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District from 2005 through March 2010.  Olens was appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to represent the 6th Congressional District on Georgia’s Department of Community Affairs Board in 2003 and served through 2010.  Olens also serves on the boards of various non-profit organizations, including the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. For the past eight years, Georgia Trend magazine has listed Olens as one of the “100 Most Influential Georgians.”

 

A graduate of the Emory University School of Law, he was a member of Ezor & Olens, P.C. from 1983 through 2010. He is a registered mediator/arbitrator with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution and has been admitted to the Georgia and U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit, the United States Supreme Court and the District of Columbia.

 

Ronald E. Bachman, FSA, MAAA, is President and CEO of Healthcare Visions, Inc., and a Senior Fellow at the Georgia Public Policy Foundation. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Center for Health Transformation, the Wye River Group on Health and the National Center for Policy Analysis.

 

Bachman, an actuary with extensive experience in managed care strategy and financial modeling, is considered a national thought leader on a wide range of health care issues and is one of the foremost experts on health care consumerism, consumer-centric Medicaid and Medicare, the uninsured population and mental health. He worked closely with the Bush White House and the IRS on the language and principles of the 2002 HRA guidelines and with Treasury and Congress on HSA legislation and regulations. He has consulted with various government agencies on national health issues and legislative and regulatory proposals. He has served as a designated expert on actuarial issues to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Congressional Budget Office, the Department of Labor, the National Institute of Mental Health and several members of Congress.
