Criminal Justice Reform Leader Judge Michael P. Boggs Keynotes Feb. 17 Event
Atlanta – Criminal justice in Georgia is transforming from an “Ugly Duckling” with the highest rate of correctional supervision in the nation (one in 13) to a “Cinderella” story of reform, thanks to committed, bipartisan leadership. And leading that effort is Georgia Appeals Court Judge Michael P. Boggs, co-Chair of Georgia’s Criminal Justice Reform Council in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Judge Boggs will be the keynote speaker at “Georgia Criminal Justice Reform: Looking Ahead, Staying Ahead,” the Georgia Public Policy Foundation’s February 17 Leadership Breakfast, 8 a.m. at Cobb County’s Georgian Club.
The Georgia Public Policy Foundation was singled out for praise by Governor Deal for launching bipartisan criminal justice reform in Georgia; Judge Boggs will share the steps the state has taken since then, and what lies ahead to keep Georgia a national model of criminal justice reform.

About Michael P. Boggs:
Judge Michael P. Boggs has served on the Court of Appeals of Georgia since January 2012. Before that, he was a Superior Court Judge for the six-county Waycross Judicial Circuit. In 2011, Judge Boggs was elected by his fellow Superior Court Judges to serve as Secretary-Treasurer of the Council of Superior Court Judges and Vice-Chair of the Council’s Legislation Committee.
An ardent supporter of accountability courts, Judge Boggs founded the Waycross Judicial Circuit Drug Court Program, served as its Presiding Judge, and served as a member of the Judicial Council of Georgia’s Standing Committee on Accountability Courts.
Judge Boggs also served in 2011 as a member of the Governor’s Judicial Nominating Commission. He was a member of Georgia’s Special Council on Criminal Justice Reform in 2011 and was appointed by Governor Deal to serve as Co-Chair of the Criminal Justice Reform Council in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Judge Boggs is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Council of State Governments Justice Center, the Supreme Court of Georgia Committee on Justice for Children, and a member of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta and the Atlanta Bar Association.
Judge Boggs is a graduate of Georgia Southern College in 1985 and earned his Juris Doctor degree from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 1990. He joined the Atlanta law firm of McKenzie & McPhail before returning to Waycross in 1992 to practice law. He served as a County Attorney, Development Authority Counsel, and as a Special Assistant Attorney General.
From 2000 to 2004 he served as Georgia state representative for Ware, Charlton and Clinch Counties, serving on the Judiciary, Public Safety and Government Affairs committees.
Among his awards, Judge Boggs received the University System of Georgia Foundation Regents Award for Excellence in Education in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments as a lawyer and legislator, the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association Leadership Award, and the District Attorneys’ Association of Georgia’s “Commitment to Justice Award” for his support of law enforcement and victims’ rights legislation.
Judge Boggs serves on the Foundation Board of Trustees at Waycross College. The Ware County resident is a member of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2009.
