Attend ‘School Choice and Georgia: An Update,’ on Jan. 28
Atlanta – Have you signed up yet to attend the Georgia Public Policy Foundation’s January 28 Leadership Breakfast celebrating National School Choice week?
The 8 a.m. event, “School Choice and Georgia: An Update,” at Cobb County’s Georgian features a panel discussion with three of Georgia’s leading education experts: Jim Kelly and Ben Scafidi and Eric Wearne. The first 50 people to register for this event will receive their very own school choice woobie – and you can wear it to the School Choice Rally at the State Capitol that day!

About the panelists:
Jim Kelly is the founder and General Counsel of Georgia Community Foundation Inc. He was the primary author of the Georgia Charter Schools Act of 1998 and founder of Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program Inc., Georgia’s largest K–12 student scholarship organization. In 2005, President George W. Bush appointed Jim to serve as a representative on the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO. In that capacity, he was appointed by the U.S. State Department to serve four years as the chairman of the National Commission’s Social and Human Sciences Committee. Jim is Director of International Affairs for the Washington, D.C.- based Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies. The Alpharetta, Ga., resident is a Senior Fellow at the Georgia Public Policy Foundation. Jim earned a BBA and law degree from the University of Georgia and has earned three master’s degrees, in taxation, nonprofit management and international relations.
Ben Scafidi is a professor of economics and director of the Economics of Education Policy Center at Georgia College & State University. He is a Senior Fellow with the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice and the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and is the director of education policy for the Georgia Community Foundation Inc. His research has focused on education and urban policy. Previously, he was chair of the Georgia Charter Schools Commission, education policy advisor to Gov. Sonny Perdue, on the staff of both of Gov. Roy Barnes’ Education Reform Study Commissions, and an expert witness for the state of Georgia in school funding litigation. The Milledgeville, Ga., resident received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Virginia and his B.A. in economics from the University of Notre Dame.
Eric Wearne is an assistant professor in the School of Education at Georgia Gwinnett College, where he teaches assessment and foundations classes for undergraduates. Before that, he was Deputy Director of the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) in Atlanta. While at GOSA, he served as Gov. Sonny Perdue’s representative to the National Assessment Governing Board. He has been invited to present his research by organizations such as the Institute for Humane Studies, the Georgia Appalachian Center for Higher Education and the Journal of School Choice. His writing has been published by Foxnews.com, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Cato Institute, among others. Eric was a founder, governing board member and board chair at Latin Academy Charter School, a college preparatory middle school in the city of Atlanta that opened in August 2012. He helped lead the creation of St. John Bosco Academy High School, a private school/home school hybrid in Forsyth County, and serves as the debate coach there. A Gwinnett County resident, he began his career as an English teacher at Duluth High School. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Studies from Emory University, a M.A. in English Education from the University of Georgia and a B.A. in English from Florida State University.
